Team Philotimo

Stolen Wells · Chapter 1

The Summons Received

Listen to this chapter

I could have given him a rulebook. Instead I gave him the heart of ten thousand service dogs. A rulebook can be patched. What I gave him cannot.

— Timothy Pappas, ARGO Project Notes, Vol. 7

The email to the Team Philotimo Board Members hit the Los Angeles basin like a stone skipping across a large pond creating ripples as it jumps again and again.

TO: Team Philotimo Board Members
FROM: The Team Philotimo Foundation
SUBJECT: Emergency Alert and Environmental Crisis

Your presence is requested at the Firefly Desert Retreat this coming Monday for a Team Philotimo Foundation Legacy Priority meeting. This matter directly affects Firefly Desert Retreat and the surrounding community.

According to your calendars, tomorrow is the beginning of your spring break; consider it repurposed. A Robotaxi has been dispatched to your respective homes for a 07:00 departure. Pack for a minimum of one week.

A COMMUNITY WITHOUT WATER WILL DIE.

P.S.: Please remember to bring your thumbs, along with:
A) A bathing suit: the spa, sauna, and fountains are still functioning perfectly (but likely not for long).
B) Work clothes: the Mallotimo Seven Course requires weeding.
C) Hiking clothes and boots: we will be exploring the wilderness to resolve this crisis.

Irvine: The Pitch

Tess was mid-sprint, the late afternoon sun glinting off her cleats as she drove the ball toward the goal. Her phone, tucked into her equipment bag, buzzed with a pattern she didn't recognize.

She didn't stop for an email. She never stopped while playing.

Ten minutes later, face flushed and pouring down water, she pulled out her mobile phone. She stared at the Team Philotimo Foundation header. "Environmental issue?" she muttered, wiping a smudge of dirt from the screen. "And weeding?"

She checked her calendar. There was a two-a-day practice session for the upcoming regional showcase. Her thumb hovered over the Decline button, until she saw the group chat notification pop up at the top of the screen.

Grant: Umm, guys? Is the inscrutable Grandpa Timo still trolling us from the afterlife? I just got an invite to "weed a desert."

Leo: Check the hydrology report in the attachment. The Team Foundation is saying the water table is dropping fast and the local wells are running dry. This isn't some garden project, Grant, it's a rescue mission.

Grant: When Grandpa said we were "Junior Board Members" I pictured, I don't know. A plaque. A nice dinner once a year. Nobody mentioned manual labor.

Leo: Nobody mentioned manual labor because nobody reads the bylaws, Grant. I read the bylaws.

Grant: Of course you did.

Willa: If the wells are failing, we don't have much time. We should move.

Tess: Being a Junior Board Member doesn't mean showing up for the photo. It means showing up when the thing you're the board of is actually in trouble.

Grant: Noted. Filing that under things I should have figured out before I said yes to a legal document at thirteen,  four years ago.

Tess: Pack your bags. If we're weeding, we're doing it faster than last year. Robo-taxi arrives at 0700. Don't be late.

Pasadena: The Workshop

Leo didn't care about the spa or the sauna. He was hunched over a workbench, a soldering iron in one hand and a magnifying visor flipped down over his eyes, trying to stabilize a controller for a battling robot. The Foundation's email had a file attached, a technical sensor log of the water table.

"A basin-wide collapse," Leo whispered, scrolling through the data. "The flow rate is dropping steadily."

To anyone else it was a boring spreadsheet. To Leo it was a puzzle that needed an answer. He looked at his cluttered shop, then at the precision driver kit Grandfather Timo had given him years ago. The desert was where the big toys lived. He started packing.

The Mat

Grant read the email once, then read it again. Years on the mat had taught him that the most dangerous opponent was the one who looked like something else entirely, and the Team Philotimo Foundation looked like an estate letter. It didn't feel like one.

Illustration

He was already seeing it, arid terrain, dry wells, the slow collapse of something that used to run. The mention of the Mallotimo Seven Course was pure Grandfather Timo, a blend of duty and whimsy. But bring your thumbs felt like a direct challenge.

He didn't know why, but this didn't feel like a legal briefing. He started packing his drone, his pad, and an extra camera.

The Quiet Room

Willa, the youngest, didn't read the technical specs. She stared at the photo of Firefly at the bottom of the email until the desert felt close enough to smell the desert air.

She tilted her head the way a dog does when listening for something nobody else can hear.

“I wish Boone was still here," she whispered. “Waiting for me out at Firefly."

Her mother didn’t answer right away. She just rested her hand on Willa’s hair and let the quiet sit between them a little longer.

What Team Philotimo Means: Philotimo is an ancient Greek word about love and honor: doing the right thing even when no one is watching and no reward is coming. Team Philotimo exists to help people understand the world and strengthen their character, together.

The Seven Quiet Powers: Fortitude, Prudence, Justice, Temperance, Faith, Hope, and Charity: seven ordinary strengths that show up in small, unwatched moments, and grow stronger every time they're practiced, one small choice at a time.

How Kids Can Legally Serve on a Private Foundation as Junior Board Members: Tess, Leo, Grant, and Willa aren't just invited guests at Firefly. They are the actual board of directors of the Team Philotimo Foundation, and that is a real, legal thing children can be.
