AI-H2O: water from thin air

In Stolen Wells, a data center's AI is secretly draining the desert's wells. The cousins' answer is AI-H2O, a way to pull clean water out of the air instead of the ground. Draft

AI-H2O is real technology; the book imagines it at a much larger scale than anyone has tested yet.

Two ways to make water from air

The old way cools air until water condenses on a cold surface, like drops on a glass of ice water. It takes a lot of power and barely works in dry desert air.

The new way uses metal-organic frameworks, crystals that are almost entirely empty space. At night they grab water molecules from the air; by day, gentle sunshine releases them as liquid water. The chemistry behind them was pioneered by Omar Yaghi. Draft

Leo's big idea

Between the third and fourth links of Mallotimo Seven, Leo makes his move. He has been waiting all afternoon for the right moment to show PENKOR's chairman a different way: take the hot, damp air the data center throws away, and turn it back into water for the desert.Draft

What would you say if you had two minutes to change a powerful person's mind?

Nature did it first

The jumping cholla

The book's AI-H2O copies a trick from a desert cactus. The jumping cholla's spines pull tiny drops of water straight out of the air and steer them toward the plant.

Try it at home: fill a metal can with ice water and wait 20 minutes. Where did the water on the outside come from? (The air. That's condensation.) Draft
